Templates are small chunks of text that can be reused on many different pages (think of them as boilerplate text if you prefer). The text is stored on special template pages.

A simple template is the 'Work in progress' warning. The text is in the page Template:WIP (along with some simple formatting to make it stand out). You can link to this page the same way as any other page, but to include its text, use curly brackets instead of square brackets. You can also omit the 'Template' part of the page name, like this: {{WIP}}. The page saves a reference to the template rather than its text; that is to say, update the template page at a later date and all pages that include the template will update too.

Templates can also use parameters: parts of the template text can be filled in with things specified on the page that includes it. This allows for some variation in the template text.

We use it for phonetic transcriptions. The template page is Template:IPA. It provides a standard link to a page that gives the reader more information on phonetic transcription. It's used like this: {{IPA|['' + the characters from the International Phonetic Alphabet'']}}. The text after the pipe character '|' is inserted into the template text, so that each page that uses the IPA template has an individual transcription. (Editors may sometimes find phonetic transcriptions made using a SAMPA template: please remove these and replace with an equivalent IPA transcription. (The SAMPA
