Hanover
From Awe
The Hanoverian dynasty ruled the United Kingdom from 1714, when George I succeeded Queen Anne, till Edward VII came to the throne in 1901, as the first monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He carried the family name of his father, Prince Albert.
George I, then the Elector of the German state of Hannover, had a claim to the throne of the Untied Kingdom through his mother Sophia Dorothea, a granddaughter of James VI and I. As his mother and he were protestants, they were named ahead of over fifty Catholic claimants in the Act of Settlement (1701) as the heirs apparent of Queen Anne. Sophia died died on 28 May 1714, and on Anne's death in August of that year), during fears of a Jacobite landing, George was proclaimed King of the Uniterd Kingdom.
- Note that the German spelling for the family, the city and the former state, is Hannover, while the English spelling has a single '-n-', Hanover.
