Plethora

The noun plethora is a formal word meaning 'a large amount'; sometimes it has the slightly pejorative overtones of 'too much'. It is usually pronounced with the stress on the first syllable and two short syllables after: 'PLE-ther-uh', IPA: /ˈplɛ θə rə/. The first '-e-' is like that in 'get', and the '-th-' is like that in 'think', although some speakers use the sound of 'the', IPA: /ˈplɛ ðə rə/.

A mispronunciation is taking root that may become the accepted standard, ewith a tressed central syllable that sounds like oar: 'pli-THOAR-uh', IPA: /plɪ ˈθəʊr ə/. AWE would urge you, in its old-fashioned predantic way, not to use this pronunciation.
