This is a bibliography page, concerning a work to which reference is made elsewhere in this guide.

The Compact Oxford English Dictionary (1991, Second Edition), ed. J. A. Simpson and E. S. C. Weiner (1 vol., 2,402 pp).
The Compact Oxford English Dictionary is a photographically reduced version (sold with magnifying glass) of the OED. 9 pages of the original are shown on one page of the Compact. This is a convenience to individuals, as it is sold for about a third of the price of the full parent 20 volumes set, and takes up much less shelf space. But it is rarely mentioned in academic bibliographies. If you want to reference this work, reference to the parent OED of which this is only a miniature version. (You may be able to find current information about pricing on the O.U.P. website at [[1]]. Occasionally commercial Book Clubs offer the The Compact Oxford English Dictionary as a 'special offer' to entice buyers to join.)

Be aware that the similarly named Compact Oxford English Dictionary of Current English is not the same dictionary. It is currently in its Third Edition, edited by Catherine Soanes and Sara Hawker. O.U.P. itself does not recommend this dictionary for "University/professional" use (see [[2]]), although it is ticked for "Senior School to University".
